I live in very, very rural France. Country-wide protests are happening because high-school students demand better… Well, better everything.
Yesterday I carpooled with my kid’s teacher to protest in the “biggest” town (pop. 9,000) in the county. 700 people marched. Some drove over 60 miles one way to be there, when gas costs 2,35€ a liter.
In the past week two kids lost an eye, one an arm, one their lower jaw, because of police violence. (The eyes might not be beyond saving, I’m not sure.) Even middle-schoolers fight with their parents to be allowed to protest.
Country-wide headcount was 400,000. Our tiny march, every tiny local march did its part.
And that was a weekday, small protest. Saturday after next is a big one.
I’m really proud of the kids.
and that is the same country that wanted to ban social media for minors because social media was harming minors? huh, I do think something is indeed harming French minors, but I don’t think it’s social media!
Corporate social media with algorithms designed to make addicts out of users and force propaganda down their throats is different than decentralized social media where people have control of what they consume while they are on it.
Ah yes, the “gotcha” everyone loves to trot out. Except Lemmy is quite obviously not what anyone is talking about when they talk about the issues of social media.
The country didn’t want that. The president and his cronies do, as an excuse to amplify mass surveillance.
The same president we’re protesting against.

Social media is definitely harming minors, just like it is harming everyone else.
… wrote someone on a social media site.

And yet, the French government did try to ban it for young people too.
Bring back social networks. No more algorithms. Only feed from people your personnaly add to your network, in the order they were posted.

Yes. I agree. I used “country” as a metonym for the ones in charge of it.
Oh okay then, sorry.
Two things can harm minors at the same time.
“No Timmy, you were on esptein island so we’re sending you to Iran, you’re immune to anything bad happening to you ever”
most importantly though, how much stuff did you destroy? it really makes the commies here jealous
