This. And the other consideration they aren’t factoring in is that the cost of gasoline makes everything else more expensive, too.

Based on what I know of wine, a $9/glass varietal is on the lower end of quality today, but that was about average a few years ago. My recollection is that a cheap wine would have gone for $5/glass in 2010. The Two Buck Chuck that we bought by the case in college now costs almost $5.

The wine hasn’t gotten any better. But it costs more to move that wine by truck to the store, so the price goes up. It costs more to manufacture the bottles and power the equipment they use to process the grapes. It costs more to harvest and transport the grapes in the first place. It’s a chain of price increases down the line that all add up with the cost of gas.

Wages haven’t meaningfully increased at a comparable rate either. Even if you’re earning a bit more now on paper than you were 5-10 years ago, everyone’s purchasing power has dropped significantly. Even if prices of certain goods haven’t gone up that much, I have to think a lot more about my spending today than I used to.

  • I’d take Framework off of the list on principle due to their (still unapologetic) financial support for Hyprland and Omarchy, which are projects run by far right racists.

I’d also take Pixel + Graphene off of the list. The situation there is precarious to say the least, as Google is trying to do everything they can to invalidate the security of Graphene on their devices. Might still be fine and reliable now, but I can’t say with confidence what the situation will look like in a year or two. Plus purchasing the device still financially supports Google.

I think the punchline is just subverted expectations. You’d expect him not to get it, be confused by something so out of place, or overreact with amazement over something so commonplace to us. But in actuality, it’s just that a strawberry margarita is always good no matter what time you’re in, along with his surprisingly muted and modern response.

  • Other than the plagiarism, butchering of a classic IP, and fad genre bandwagoning?

It’s a grindy game in a genre that otherwise caters to F2P but comes with an extra $40 price tag. It’s also just plain bland and soulless, which really represents how far Bungie has fallen as a developer. The only thing they can really do is give bad consulting advice to other Sony studios on how to make live service games, which has not worked out yet for even one of them. And Destiny died for this game to happen.

Not to mention that it makes Sony money. Regardless of how defeatist it is or how little the general public cares, they remain on my personal “do not buy” list.

  • They’re right, though.

Enshittification makes companies money by being actively consumer hostile. Companies know they will lose customers by making unpopular decisions. But these days, they all know how to keep making more money in spite of/because of it.

Sony knows people hate this move. But the problem is that it saves them way more money than they’d ever lose in sales. They get to have a more captive audience with lending/reselling no longer a thing, no longer have to pay for materials and distribution for discs, no longer need to include a disc drive in the cost of the console, etc.

And they know the gambit will pay off, because what are people going to do otherwise? Pay the cost of a PS5 just for RAM?
