Open Source@lemmy.ml•Creator of free Adobe clones unveils open-source Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word replications — Autodesk tools and other subscription-based services may come next
4·17 hours agoYeah, these are very different tools. And yeah UX in GIMP is something else.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Creator of free Adobe clones unveils open-source Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word replications — Autodesk tools and other subscription-based services may come next
178·20 hours agoIt’s very obviously better to have open tools than closed ones. This whole screeching about slop is both incredibly tiresome and irrational in the extreme. These are new tools that make software development easier, people are making useful things with them, and they’re helping people move off proprietary software. That’s obviously a net positive.
If you don’t like the tools people are using go ahead and make something comparable by hand, except we both know that you can’t. So, you’re adding nothing constructive to the discussion here.

187·20 hours agoYou’ve obviously never used Photoshop or GIMP because if you have then you would immediately understand why. GIMP is a completely different experience, and its UX is far inferior to Photoshop. On top of that, anybody who is used to the workflow in Photoshop will have a very steep learning curve using GIMP.
Believe it or not, but most people just want a tool that works for what they’re trying to do. These apps have some bugs and rough edges still, but they’re very much usable and make it trivial to switch for anybody who’s used to Photoshop.

World News@lemmy.ml•South Korea to recall its ambassador to Ukraine over North Korean POW dispute
131·3 days agoOh so what happened was that the banderites captured some DPRK soldiers and made a secret deal with occupied Korea to send them over. Then the green goblin started bragging about it which created tensions with DPRK, so occupied Korea is furious about it. And they got a non apology from the banderites, so apparently that was the last straw even for them.

51·6 days agoIt’s not like you can’t find more information online if you’re really interested now that you know what to look for is it?
Also, it’s kind of obvious why if you try using a bit of critical thinking. Ask yourself what economic impact it would have on farmers in Europe, how that might affect European politics, and you’ll be able to work out the answer all on your own.
Also, not sure what part of the headline you think is sensationalized. It’s literally just a statement of fact.

World News@lemmy.ml•Russia says European arms factories supplying Ukraine are potential military targets for Moscow
2·7 days agoThe ruling class isn’t homogeneous though. You have people who built their wealth on the relationship with Europe, but now a lot of the ties are largely cut. And trade with the Global South is now replacing it. So, you have a new group of capitalists who are not interested in Europe in the slightest, and even see resumption of trade with Europe as a threat to the niches they occupy. I don’t think the actions Russia is currently taking suggest that she represents the capitalists who are in the ascendant right now.

For an office suite LibreOffice is fine, although compatibility with MS Office is still spotty. But for graphics there really aren’t drop in replacements for Adobe apps right now.
At the end of the day, I don’t really care what tools software is made with. Either it works well or it doesn’t. You can make quality projects using LLMs and you can make really shitty software without them. The deciding factor in both cases is skill ans knowledge of the developer building the app.
