My hatred of taking a shower is the same hatred I have for leaving the shower. That’s it? I just don’t like that little short period in-between? I just rationalize other reasons? Fuck me.

Why do I get irritated when someone points out the weight my clothes have on my body?

Wait, I might be onto something. When I need to take a shower. I don’t tell myself to take a shower over and over. I just notice the weight of my clothes on my body and go take a shower to relieve that frustration.

  • Trump will threaten to. And European leaders will cave to demands of the Trump admin again and again. Whether it’s something that benefits one of his businesses or investments. Or all the way up to joining the Iran War.

At some point. We’re going to run out of “this temporary measure will bring oil futures down”. And, at that point, Europe will be forced into, at first, symbolic support of the Iran war, material support of the Iran War, and finally stuck in the same unwinnable War the US is.

  • I don’t disagree. I think what I’m trying to say is that you are applying rationality and consistency behind “what is legal” and how that is determined. You’re applying that reason to the way laws are created or interpreted.

But, “what is legal” is not rational or consistent in reality. What is legal or illegal is primarily determined by maintaining the interests and structures of existing economic systems. Systems that are built upon maintaining profits.

I’m not disagreeing with your reasoning. I’m saying that your rational thinking is not being applied by the systems that decide what is legal or what is illegal. The primary logic that is being applied is “is this hurting profits?”. And if the answer to that question is “yes” then these systems will create laws and classifications that are irrational and filled with contradictions; in order to protect those profits.

  • I’d say it’s more about the ease of use that it’s targeted. The average person is not getting a permanent mp3 or mp4 of a video by watching YouTube.

If they were to target anything it would be browser based extensions that allow that easily with a download button. Which are basically using the same routes that yt-dlp is using and putting a UI element for it.

I know. From the perspective of you and I it’s silly to target some specific popular method because there is no logic to do so. The logic they are using isn’t in the tool and how it’s made. The logic is just targeting something that’s popular. Rather than admit that the economic systems that rely on private property and scarcity are just fundamentally incompatible with digital content.

We’ve lived with an outdated economic system of incentives that should have died when the Internet was born. At least for digital content. This is just another denial of that contradiction. It doesn’t have to have a logical reason for it. It’s been illogical since the start.

Yes. And the last two comments actually touch on a fundamental problem with modern modes of production. It’s why you’re both correct. More specifically, the relationship of laborers to the actual outcome of their labor.

Yes, it’s a lack basic problem solving skills. Or really, any interest in solving the problem. But, humans are fundamentally animals. And like any other animal, we look to conserve energy if we can obtain the same outcome.

The “issue” is seen as an opportunity for a break. The workers are so alienated from their labor that a minor problem has no incentive to be solved or thought about in order to continue the labor. It’s the “not my problem” thinking that wage labor relationships create.

The worker is not getting paid less or more when the widget maker breaks at the widget factory. The widget maker broke. They don’t get paid extra to fix the minor problem with the widget maker. They actually now have a perfectly acceptable excuse to reduce their labor output and still receive the same wage. Which is the goal and relationship with any wage labor job. From the software engineer to the janitor. To get the most amount of pay for the least amount of work.

“Laziness” is what people call it. But, it’s changed since the days of hunter gathering. The relationship of ones labor is not connected to a social group. They won’t be given less berries or a less favorable cut of meat for being lazy. They get a wage. Their relationship that builds incentives is not with what is being produced, who is consuming that production, or even the workers they produce it alongside. The relationship at the end of the day; is with a wage.

“Laziness” in modern work structures is actually a worker being smart and optimizing for individual gain based on the environment they are forced to live within. As long as they can maintain their wage and expell less of their energy in mental or physical labor; they are doing what is best for them.

And they don’t even need to understand any of this. It comes naturally. It’s why so many modern day companies spend so much time trying to reinforce the idea of “we’re a family”. It’s why we all think “why the fuck are we doing this “team outing” that probably costs more than I make in a month?”

It’s literally all there to try to get your monkey brain to think the relationship at the company is “with the people” and not with your wage.

It’s with your wage. Take a break when the widget makers breaks. Take your time if your job is to fix the widget maker. Take as much time as you can while still remaining hired.

Do the least amount of work for the most amount of pay you can get away with. Oh, and unionize. You’ll see the widget maker will break down less often and get simple fixes as soon as their is solidarity among workers and not the illusion of competition. Though, unfortunately many unions are corporate captured. So you may already be working under that.

I like analogies so I’ll ad my own. Its like a leatherworker not knowing anything about how a hide is tanned. Or a tailor not knowing how fabric is woven.

It’s really really important to the trade to understand the process in which their base materials are created. They don’t need to know the exact skills of creating those materials to the degree of someone at a Tannery or a Mill. But it’s important to the work of both of those trades to understand the basic process. And really I don’t think a leatherworker or tailor could be considered to hold either of those titles if they didn’t understand the basics.

We don’t have that with modern tech. The materials and tools that modern workers use appear as complete black boxes to them. Like magical black boxes. And it’s honestly, a fundamental incompatibility with the incentive structures of existing economic systems that were forced upon a technology that should have made them obsolete in the 90s. But I digress.

It was always running on a free base (Slackware). Unraid sells because of its ease of use and reliability. It’s selling the features on top of the OS. It wouldn’t be as popular or as functional as it is if it wasn’t running Linux under the hood.

If there is one piece of software I’ve not regretted buying a lifetime license for, it’s been Unraid.

It may not be for everyone. And it has its quirks like anything else. But I’ve been running it for years now and have even had to experience the dead drive recovery process. It’s solid.

Could I use something free? Probably. But, I’m getting old. I just want something that has good community support, has an nice interface, and also still allows me to get my hands dirty with bash or programming when I need to.

  • Sure. I’m not an expert and I’m only a single person. But I am smart enough to look and see what is working.

China is reaching renewable energy power surplus. Meaning their production of solar panels, windmills, nuclear power, etc is reaching a point at which it will exceed the power consumption of their entire country.

This is in “energy potential”. Meaning, it includes the production of renewable energy products, their energy production over their lifetime, and accounting for grown in demand over that time period. It’s a little bit different than saying that they are running on entirely renewable energy. They are not. They are unfortunately being forced to burn more coal right now due to the Iran war. A lot of their production of renewable energy is sold outside of China. I wanted to clarify though, since this is an important distinction.

The point being. China, has gone from a preindustrial peasant society post WW2, victims of a genocide, on the level of the Holocaust, from the Japanese fascist; to, now, being the first country in the world that is capable of replacing their entire energy production with renewable energy.

Whatever China is doing. We need to learn FROM THAT and quickly. We need to be mimicking their economic planning, at the very least, around the control of natural resources and energy production. Because there is no amount of cold war 2 propaganda that should overpower the threat of mass climate based genocide.

We don’t have to be “pro China”, we don’t have to “be exactly like China”. But we are currently pretending that there is not a major world power that IS planning for and capable of running a modern and cutting edge technological society that is capable of producing energy almost entirely without greenhouse gas production.

We don’t need to pretend there is some “future silicon valley tech” that will save us. There is literally already an example to follow.

If every country was producing renewable energy as China currently is, the world would have literally removed its dependence on fossil fuels.

Edit: Renewable Energy production is projected to exceed Chinas entire energy consumption by 2033 currently. Their industry is growing renewable production at 4x the rate that their domestic consumption is growing.

  • In general, yes, the western world was under the false assumption that the leaders it had were, at the very least, aligned in the interest of self preservation. Many are still living with this false belief today.

I think it’s less about societal self discipline though; and more about the incompatibility of the societal hierarchy with working to solve the problem of climate change. The contradictions between the ruling and working class are in conflict when it comes to the priority of climate change. Climate change is an opportunity for further wealth concentration for the ruling class of our society; and that same ruling class has “drank their own Koolaid” in the idea of American and Western exceptionalism.

Capitalism is incapable of addressing the problems of climate change. It’s like trying to put out a fire and bringing a bulldozer instead of a firetruck.

  • Climate change. We all thought we were gonna have to cut back on consumption, use less fossil fuels, and change our infrastructure entirely to renewable energy.

Thankfully it’s not a problem anymore at all. Our wise leaders just decided to stop talking about it and instead just decided we’d speed the process up, burn fossil fuels for glorified chat bots while draining our fresh water resources.

Thankfully it’s not a problem anymore. Because a problem would imply it’s something that has a solution. We’re far past that point. We’re essentially watching this generation of our oligarchs committing a mass global genocide of the upcoming generations.

    Problem solved.

  • I forget who I was listening to. But someone said we need to ban any politicians or talking media heads using the word “problematic”.

Not literally ban it. Obviously. But it is exhausting hearing things like this get covered without actually saying what the PROBLEM is. What the actual outcomes of previous “problematic” things were and how they lead to the current problem.

Everything is analyzed in a vacuum and the doubt and good faith is always placed towards the people and institutions that are entirely dismantling any form of democracy.

It is to the point that anyone that is doing this is just as complicit in the rise of fascism as the people actively working to dismantle the Democratic process. We are so far past the fucking Rubicon that this type of language is nothing but an excuse for and solidarity with the fascist.

This isn’t directed at the whistleblower. But more generally with how these types of stories are covered. Always pointing to a “problem” without taking any reasonable conclusion and explanation of the goals and outcomes.

It’s the talking heads on TV with the “Let’s just tell everyone to vote in person” types of useless and submissive solutions.
