  • I looked it up and the reasoning seems to have been that strychnine poisoning causes lethal, uncontrollable muscle spasms, so a very small dose might increase the strength or speed of muscle contractions in a way that improves athletic performance. They got the idea because it was sometimes used medically for the same reason, to try to treat heart conditions prior to the development of more effective treatments.

    Obviously it didn’t really work.

  • There’s an indie platformer called Fallen Leaf that has really good reviews. In the opening cutscene you are told a story about how in the past the world was saved by sealing away a great evil underground. The first level of the game sees you exploring a cave that your main character didn’t even want to be in, at the behest of his sister (IIRC).

Some ways into the cave your path is blocked by a talking bear who politely but firmly explains that it is dangerous ahead and no one may pass. If you attempt to get past them, they gently boop you back.

What the game clearly wants you to do is shoot a stalactite so that it falls on the bear. No, game, I don’t think I’m going to murder this innocent bear just so that I can be the one who releases the ancient evil I will spend the rest of the game fighting against. I will just quit here while the world is still safe and the polite bear is unharmed, thanks.

  • I used to do an egg and a couple pieces of lunch meat.

Now I don’t eat eggs or meat anymore, so I tear up a sheet of nori (dried seaweed), add about six ounces of cubed tofu, one spoonful of sambal oelek (chili paste), and a little bit of sesame oil (add the sesame oil last, after taking it off the heat).

Per serving, the tofu is the most expensive, then the nori, so if the budget is tight you could cut there (but the tofu is also the only protein). One container of chili paste or sesame oil is enough for many servings, I couldn’t say how much it costs per serving but it it’s probably less than the noodle packet.
