“If man chooses oblivion, he can go right on leaving his fate to his political leaders. If he chooses Utopia, he must initiate an enormous education program - immediately, if not sooner.”

In my experience as a former free speech absolutist, I find that the best communities are well-moderated. Unmoderated ones inevitably become full of scam ads and csam links.
I’m all for Dread and Tor but I now understand them has necessarily double-edged swords
I like how the autogenerated meeting invite does not include any plaintext telling you the meeting date and time
One of the moral perversities of religion is the notion that humans are a qualitatively different class of Thing than other animals. That they are created for our use.
Modern science is finding strong evidence that not just mammals but even birds and insects likely have subjective experience, imagination, and real, subjective feelings of pain and pleasure.

I mean, how do you interpret Alexander Graham Bell asking his male helper to “Come in here”
Come! In here!
Upscaling old porn to 4k is a worthy use of AI, need to see more of this

In the early heyday of FB I set up accounts for my elderly parents thinking it would make it easy for them to see pics & clips of their grandkids and such.
Thank goodness they never used them.

Fun story. In College I did a summer semester in the UK. I had a long ponytail, wore tye-dyes… looked like a stoner (because I was a stoner)
My friend worked at a food co-op and gave me some Chamomile tea to help with jetlag. It was Eco-friendly bulk packaging: green dried leaf in a plastic baggie. I thought nothing of it and tossed it in my carry-on along with a textbook I’d hoped to read. And of course I had 1/4 oz of weed in my underpants on the theory there is no realistic chance I end up getting strip searched.
I walk up to Customs Officer who asks my purpose in visiting. Well, I was going to summer school but also visiting relatives so I vacillated for a second. Officer gets suspicious, asks name of the school. Well it was University College of London but there are like 3 schools with very similar names (Imperial College London, Kings College London) and I brainfarted for a second on which it was.
So now she knows for sure she’s got a druggie and I’m actually starting to get legit scared. She tells me to “open up that bag then, let’s have a look”. I open it, she sees the baggie in full view, swoops in to grab it and demands, “WHAT IS THIS?!”
… and at that moment, relief! I knew I was saved!
“That’s chamomille tea, ma’am. To help with jet lag.”
She opens it, smells it, clearly is embarrassed, crossly tells me to zip up my bag and go on my way.
And what did I learn from this?
LSD is colorless, odorless, and you can bring a shitload on a piece of paper that nobody will ever find. Travel with LSD, not weed

(only vaguely relevant, but I love this one so much)
What do you call Alternative Medicine that works?
Medicine

It was one of the first movies I ever saw high (marijuana)
Summer after senior year of high school. Spent most days either getting completely stoned off my ass, or on a days-long wild wild goose chase after a dealers’ buddies’ friend who might have a bag.
Anyway, toward the start of the summer, my best was going to have his mom’s apartment all to himself that day and he suggested we get high and watch The Forbidden Zone. I want those hours back.
Toward the end of the summer, we finally got our hands on some acid. Yes, he had us watch The Wall. No, I wish we hadn’t.

Fun fact: some people stop it near the top or middle, and alter nature’s plumbing
friendly Narwhal named Gershwin
You’ve met him, too?
DMT is IMO not a “recreational” drug. The few times I’ve done it, it was a shitload of mental and emotional work to keep up with. Definitely alternate realities though – LSD lets you wander into otherworldly thoughts; Psilocybin lets you visualize them vividly; DMT slams them into your sensory apparatus like a brick wrapped in lemon
… whie just a few microliters of LSD can transport you across the ENTIRE UNIVERSE
Holy shit, it’s legit. Just looked it up

Disjointed, bad acting, bad writing imo
Despite star power
+1 on both of these esp Anton. He’s a wonderful person!
