Non profits likely can’t afford a team of tech workers to maintain opensource infrastructure.
No, what they actually can’t afford to do is rely on Microsoft? That’s who lost their data in reality?

Shouldn’t this be an eth (ð) and not a thorn? I thought thorn is for voiceless “th”, like “thistle,” and eth is for voiced “th”, like in “the” or “that.”

They’re not like six figures new, that was basically tesla advertising to make them seem more expensive than they actually are (for conspicuous consumption purposes). Most of the models actually purchased are around $60K

They meant move away from diesel-electric and I think you know it, this is highly pedantic even by railroad nerd standards.

I’ve bought sooo many sex toys on Amazon, they definitely didn’t engage with that part of my uhhh “legacy.”

I’m a professional carpenter. I buy a fair amount of tools on Amazon. But I don’t have a home workshop, I just use this stuff at work. I live in a tiny apartment haha. I just think it’s funny that amazon thinks this is all a hobby for me.

Nothing like “falsely reports products as stolen to get a refund while keeping them.” Phew! I mean… damn porch pirates!

It thinks i do all the work on my own car because I bought a Haynes manual one time 😂

I mean, the fact that growth is slowing is relevant. What would be really interesting is: has the pace of opening new stores changed? Because if they’re opening lots of new stores without investing in more self checkout machines, that would be indicative that they’re going to be less of a thing going forward

They’re huge, but the calculators are the only thing they sell to consumers. Mostly they make wholesale components for other companies IIRC

Mechanical calculators have been around since the 1700’s and widespread since the 1920’s, though. And before that we had the abacus and slide rule. Mental math has never been a flex, lol

I love the Mandela effect, or as I like to call it, “white people don’t pay attention to African politics and then made up a whole thing to explain why they thought Nelson Mandela was dead.”

So why would they have said such a thing to you?
That’s a great fucking question! Nevertheless, it happened.

I have specific memories of multiple math teachers telling me this from elementary school through high school, in the 90’s and early 00’s. Then I got to college and it was all “how good are you at making computers do all the math for you?” AKA computer science

Teaching kids to do math without calculators is like teaching people to do carpentry without a measuring tape. It’s slower and less accurate for no real benefit. Before we had calculators, everyone used an abacus or a slide rule. Calculation aids have always been an integral part of math, and knowing how to properly apply them makes you better at math (faster, more accurate, deeper understanding). We literally developed computers in the first place so we could do less mental math because it is so unreliable.
Why does the logic of technology/industry fall apart for calculators? I’ve never understood it. There’s no other field where we perceive “lack of tool use” to be an advantage.
EDIT: It would be like practicing fingerpainting in art class because “you won’t always have a brush in your pocket” Hell, why even learn to read when you won’t always have a book in your pocket? Better not play basketball in gym class, you won’t always have a ball in your pocket! It’s just always been a totally goofy attitude. I didn’t accept this illogical take as a child and I sure don’t accept it now 😂

Same. I worked in retail for years, I can use a cash register just fine. These things are infuriating though no matter what you do. Terrible cashier-user experience compared to just like a regular grocery store checkout line

“The car ran a person over after EvilHankVenture let it roll down hill.” Agency restored!
You gotta wonder what fucked up stuff he did during his human life, to get reincarnated as one of the animal kingdom’s foremost rapists…
