Technology@lemmy.world•Google’s AI Is Destroying Search, the Internet, and Your BrainEnglish
47·14 days agoI don’t think today’s bots take any notice of robots.txt. It’s a relic from a more civilized time.

Technology@lemmy.world•Shopify CEO says employees' 'slop grenades' are making more work for everyone elseEnglish
111·16 days agoI find it can speed me up, but it’s very easy to become lazy and find myself asking the AI to do things I could do perfectly well myself, quickly and using far less electricity. And then before I know it I have a huge pile of slop that I don’t know my way around, and I spend the time on the other end trying to understand and check it all. It feels amazing up front, but you pay later.

Technology@lemmy.world•Raspberry Pi is intentionally blocking RAM capacity upgradesEnglish
23·16 days agoI mean… aren’t hackers the target audience for Raspberry Pis?
They used to be. But for the last few years it has looked less and less like that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Raspberry Pi is intentionally blocking RAM capacity upgradesEnglish
981·16 days agoTheir excuse definitely smells like bullshit. It just seems they want to do the Apple thing of making sure they get the money for the upgrade, plus a premium. Except even Apple has a technical reason they don’t allow upgrades, which Raspberry Pi doesn’t.

5·16 days agoI have pretty strict DNS filtering across the home network, so I assumed it was that. But it still loads for me in Brave on Linux. It didn’t load in Vanadium on GrapheneOS.

Technology@lemmy.world•Republican bill would order ISPs, DNS providers, and VPNs to block piracy sitesEnglish
10·20 days agoI’m no expert, but some examples I know of are:
Tribler: a bittorrent-based app with built-in search and some extra security compared to regular bittorrent.
Nicotine+ and similar apps: clients for the Soulseek network, where you download an entire file from a single peer. Also searchable.
There’s no need to use a website for either of these.

World News@lemmy.ml•Ukraine war spreads to Arctic as nuclear tensions escalate
617·21 days agoPresident Donald Trump later told Ukraine to stop attacking Russia’s diesel infrastructure, saying fuel shortages due to the strikes were “hurting the world,” without explicitly acknowledging the fact that the spike in global energy prices is largely driven by the Iran war.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘We’re not going to back down’: tiny Portland B&B stands up to Airbnb’s legal bid to ‘monopolise’ letters ‘bnb’English
46·24 days agoGenericide refers to the gradual process of a trademarked term becoming generic through use by the common individual. When a term becomes generic, the term cannot receive a trademark nor can current trademarks be enforced.
This case isn’t that though. The term “bnb” or “BnB” was common before Airbnb incorporated it into their company name. So this is a company taking an already common term and trying to trademark it and make it their own.

38·28 days agoWhen you recognize how common it is that sociopaths work their way into power, precisely because they get pleasure from controlling and being cruel to others, a lot of how the world is starts to make sense.

261·28 days agoThe problem is, the overwhelming majority of Americans has far less power than the handful of rich Americans who want to own the world.
