I played this card at an apartment complex I lived in years ago. We brought up multiple issues that they consistently failed to address, they replied with threats of fees or terminating our lease, and we shot back by getting in touch with a volunteer arbitrator at a local housing authority office. This huge guy showed up, assessed all the problems we had, then hand-delivered a notice to the office. Everything got fixed in the next 48 hours and we never heard from the office staff again. Not sure if these services still exist…

51·6 days agoHadn’t you heard? Some day, one of these things is gonna cure cancer. We all just gotta kill ourselves subsidizing it until then!
like the point is that is should be theirs?
But the “gains” weren’t really “theirs” either, since they previously belonged to an organism lower in the food chain. It’s the circle of life.
For the plants part, it’s worth mentioning that it takes more plants for animal products than it does to eat them directly
I’m not arguing for or against eating anything, I’m saying that no matter what you eat, you’re “getting their gains.”

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•For the longest time I suspected I had a depression, but it turns out it’s not me and everything just really sucks that bad.English
2·12 days agoIf you’re depressed because life sucks, then you should be motivated to fix what sucks. Unfortunately, that’s not how depression works.
Unfortunately, that’s not how life works, either. We are beset on all sides by things that suck AND which we have little-to-no power to influence.
EUGH, that’s like a whole extra SYLLABLE
(but this is also how I say it)
They stopped being “their” gains when they ceased to live, and became “your” gains when you ate them.
The same statement is true for plants, too.
(Saying this as someone who eats very little meat for animal rights reasons, and merely wishes to be padantic right now for some reason)

3·25 days agoI was but a boy of 12 when I first noticed her; a sleek and scaly body breaking the water’s surface in my grandfather’s pond. Everything changed that day. Gracefully darting and turning with such a distinctly feminine wile, she was… different from the other girls. Different like me. I was sure that she was watching me, just as I was watching her. Could she also be thinking, “is this love?”
