  • Am I missing something here, or does the whole iced coffee thing not just amount to the question of whether you should take food or drink to an interview?

If someone brings a half eaten big mac to an interview, that’s not creating the best impression. It doesn’t suggest they are taking the interview very seriously. Same goes for iced coffee, popcorn, red bull or whatever. You could make the case that some “professionalism” norms are inherently racist (no doubt they are mostly arbitrary rules made up by white men), but I’m at a loss as to how this particular one might be. It is just that we should do away with the whole concept of professionalism and just say anything goes in the workplace? I’m not convinced that would go well.

EDIT: Just for clarity I’m not saying it should be a deal breaker either. Only that you could reasonably expect to make a better impression without an iced coffee than with one.

  • It would have worked so well. 2 digit timestamp gives you 15 (old)minute accuracy which is just perfect for appointments and organizing your day. Digital minutes would be a bit longer than old minutes which is fine for bus/train times etc. Digital seconds a bit shorter than old seconds which is great for timing things. I always thought a second was a wee bit longer than it ought to be anyway.

  • The Force Awakens was crap but it tended to get the benefit of the doubt because there were all these mysterious threads that might be going somewhere interesting. But the problem is, JJ Abrams had no clue about where he was going with any of it. That’s unforgivable. You need some idea of the story you want to tell. Or just hire a fucking writer ffs. Plenty of people know how to tell a story, JJ Abrams just isn’t one of them. I don’t want to let Rian Johnson off the hook but it was already on a bad trajectory before he crashed it into the ground.

I can confirm that stuff was much more exciting in my 30’s than it is now I’m in my 50’s, but was more exciting still when I was a kid. The reason for me is partly that there were so many things I could experience for the first time, combined with a general sense of optimism and endless possibility about what could happen in the future. The world was full of unknowns that have gradually become known, which is comparatively dull.

I guess a lot of younger people today might not feel that same sense of optimism, since it was largely connected to hopes about where technology and social development might take us, and if the last decade or two is anything to go by, it doesn’t look so promising.
