Turning off the assistant entirely isn’t a step I’d expect a lot of people to take (because they use the assistants). I think it’ll stick around if you can tolerate it, because it’s likely provided for certain parties that will be very irritated if that ability is removed.
I not only can tolerate it, but it’s what I prefer. I wish they’d put “hold power button” back to show the restart dialog, I never used the assistant at all, and I even turned off that “google feed screen” that sits to the left of normal android screens. I love to disable junk.


The class is for healthcare and I won’t get more specific, but yes, you can use AI today to make whole ass Excel spreadsheets.

You can disable Android auto’s Gemini by setting the digital assistant on your android phone to “none” under default apps.
If you use these things more generally that might hurt you more than help, but it got rid of the bloviating idiot in the way of the old useful voice that gave me directions.


I have swap allocated too, but if you’re sitting there continually powering RAM and have a whole lot of it available (rarer these days), it doesn’t make a lot of sense to throw all of your running programs into it when there’s no current memory pressure. It degrades performance needlessly.
I love how little linux swaps with a large amount of RAM. I was one of those fortunate enough to buy computers with large amounts of RAM before the rampocalypse occurred. So I have 64gb in this laptop, and I want it to be used.
I don’t think people have figured out yet that the coding was not the hard part of most software development. Maybe it is when you’re really junior or unimaginative, but it it’s more about communication issues, building the “right thing”, testing, etc. etc. forever and Claude hasn’t solved much or any of that (and has made some of it worse).

Hah, and then nobody will buy it. They tried to up token prices earlier this year and were forced to go back to selling $10000 of compute for $100 in like a month because usage dropped off.
It’s painfully obvious to me as a (reluctant) daily user of these things that most people will have no use for it.
Maybe there are some people for whom the barrier to entry for software development was that they didn’t want to learn a programming language but were otherwise very technical and wanted to create software, but that seems like it’s a small amount of people.
Aside from the coding itself, developing software with Claude has all of the same problems developing software without it had.
There are also new risks to developing software with it, because among other things it further siloes developers (into teams of one + chatbot).

Even if the numbers are what you’re saying they are…and the same number of full-time developers transition to become full-time prompters (doubtful), and every one of them buys a $100 a month subscription that’s only 60 some odd billion a year. They’re projecting revenues to grow into the trillions per year. Literally how?
Even if every developer has a max subscription and uses it to mostly or completely automate their coding activities…how many people is that? A few hundred thousand? Where are these supposed revenues going to come from?

Yeah they basically set up a mutually assured destruction patent stalemate with the existing big players. Any new entrant gets blown to high hell.
It looks to me like they’re lobbying to do the same with “AI” right now. They want to set up some stupid protectionist racket where it’ll be as impossible to use a cheap chatbot as it is to buy a cheap EV in the states.

I switched companies this year, and there’s a big difference between working for a company that is shrinking and one that is growing right now.
