Technology@lemmy.world•How the stories about all-powerful "AI" are swallowing the worldEnglish
31·18 days agoIt’s simpler than that. Humans have a negativity bias, which has generally served our evolutionary ancestors by avoiding any “rustling in bushes” as potential tigers. These days, it’s weaponized by social media platforms and news outlets to seize people’s attention and manipulate their perceptions.
And given that most people have no idea how AI actually works, when the news reports the claptrap that the people making it are “”“worried”“” that their creation will imminently kill us all
and please invest more money in this see how capable it is please god we are bleeding money, people take it as gospel that our demise is imminent and are looking for ways to avoid it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google’s AI Is Destroying Search, the Internet, and Your BrainEnglish
35·19 days agoIt’s worse than that. Not only are people going with the AI Overview as gospel, the search results themselves have nothing to do with the normal SEO that’s been the standard for the last 20+ years. People are picking the AI Summary, because the search itself is fundamentally broken.
Gone are the days that website content + traffic determine the order or relevance. Now websites have to include specifically formatted fluff that the AI summarizers like in order to show as relevant results. Just ask Louis Rossman.

Certainly a cool idea, and I hope it succeeds and turns out to be what it seems.
No price listed on their crowd fund page, so who can say what this might cost? Uses a Raspberry Pi Zero W for the brains and a STM32 for the cartridge board.

Technology@lemmy.world•Bernie Sanders proposes 20 year prison sentence for AI devs who plow ahead with Artificial Superintelligence plans - penalty on par with illegally developing rogue nuclear weaponsEnglish
11·28 days agoDisagree. It was a marginal tax rate for income over $400k. There were relatively few millionaires back then, so with the current runaway class income divide, it would assuredly do something regarding modern multimillionaires and beyond.
The solution would have to be twofold: tax the wealthy properly and close the loopholes (like taxing unrealized gains).
Though in general, I’m not a huge fan of this solution, because it’s still pro-capitalism, but it would be a step in the right direction at the very least.

121·29 days agoIf the US would fix its tax system, such that the wealthy paid 90% after a certain amount again (as they did under Eisenhower) without all these loopholes, the wealthy wouldn’t be so dangerous.
They could easily be rendered toothless before even worrying about how much time they deserve behind bars (which is still a lot).

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Didn't Steal the Mathematician's Work, Sam Altman DidEnglish
3·1 month agoThat’s the core problem. The wealthy capitalists both own and drive the development of ML right now. I agree that machine learning algorithms (AI) in a vacuum aren’t inherently a problem, but that’s just a hypothetical position versus the material reality we all face every day.
Maybe we’ll get global Socialism or Communism someday, but trying to convince people that AI is fundamentally good underneath it all is putting the cart before the horse; AI as it stands is a symbol of Capitalism and the problems it embodies.
Worry about the nuances of AI after you’ve dealt with the rot.

36·1 month agoI think they might mean that Windows is ultimately a dead end. I agree that its far from dead, but Valve really got the ball rolling with Proton.
Now that there’s a bunch of bigger influencers “trying Linux” as a daily driver and often having a good experience, coupled with Windows/Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot every other month, I think we’re seeing a shift in people’s perception (at least regarding what their possible options are). That said, Linux still has a ways to go until it even breaks 10% desktop share, and I don’t think it will be a threat even to Apple until Linux hits 15%.

2072·1 month agoIs this some new money laundering thing? Are companies “buying in” to hobnob with other wealthy people? Is this just the latest Country Club or whatever?
I seriously don’t understand why all these companies are throwing money at a project that is almost assuredly going to “mismanage” it.

OpenAI had their little failure of a presentation recently, and they’re introducing a “fast response” tier for 6x the current subscription cost. This is their attempt to get people used to higher pricing. They are bleeding money, and they will need to raise prices sooner than later to start attempting to make it back.
Once they do, a good chunk of their customers will simply stop paying, forcing the AI companies to further raise prices, causing more customers to leave, etc.
AI companies are trying (and failing) to be indispensable, and they need that to have any hope of survival. It’s only a matter of time before they collapse, and only then might we see what’s actually beneficial about machine learning.
