472·13 days agoIf you think that is bad:
In 2020, Nature Medicine reported the story of Australian woman Rita Leggett, who’d received an experimental brain implant to treat her epilepsy. Implanted as part of a clinical trial, the device worked for Leggett: she stopped having seizures. However, mid-way through the trial, NeuroVista, the company that made the device, folded after investors became nervous about providing financial backing to such invasive technology.
Because the company was no longer operating, there was no means of monitoring the device. It was, quite literally, dead in Leggett’s head (well, not quite – the battery was meant to last three years). Her husband offered to buy the device from NeuroVista but was refused because of its proprietary components. Her only option was to have the device removed or ‘explanted’.

Technology@lemmy.world•US automakers urge Congress to quickly pass law banning Chinese carsEnglish
3·1 month ago[China’s auto industry has] grown from holding 16 percent of global market share to 25 percent—with automotive analysts predicting that this value could reach one-third by 2030.
I would imagine that global market share would explode if they were allowed access to the American market. Especially with oil prices being what they are.

Technology@lemmy.world•US automakers urge Congress to quickly pass law banning Chinese carsEnglish
822·1 month agoIt makes sense. The investment in and development of EVs and EV manufacturing has been fully kneecapped by the American auto and oil industries.
If China came in, the American auto industry would be destroyed overnight due to the lack of competitive vehicles.
The propaganda of “Chinese vehicles are cheap and dangerous” only works when people don’t have the product in front of them.

1·2 months agoYour argument is that TikTok creates a national security risk by directing users to right or alt-right leaning views.
You are ignoring YT’s documented past of doing this exact thing because “China bad”.
YouTube also funneled German users to that same alt-right party.

21·2 months agoI guess. TikTok did raise awareness of the Gaza genocide and, by extension, create instability in the US. It also distanced the public from the US government’s closest ally, Israel.
