  • I don’t know how you manage to keep being confused about this whole deal. When you buy a disk, you don’t care what’s in the empty space. You format it as an encrypted disk by writing a few sectors. When you want to throw it out, you delete the keys that decrypt what you wrote over the life of the disk, and perhaps wipe the sectors containing encryption metadata. What is unclear about this?

Besides, when the disk is configured as encrypted, the junk in the empty sectors can’t be read by decrypting it. Unless it’s software encryption and you bypass it by poking the disk directly, you can’t read anything from those sectors. Which, again, contain either noise, or what the possible previous owner has written there.

  • Helvetica was very popular for its unapologetically modernist and neutral look, such that its overuse was criticized even before Arial swooped in — it was particularly widespread in corporate and government design. Microsoft cloned Helvetica as Arial so as to not pay for the licensing, but Arial is disliked by typeface designers for details which elude me (just like other MS fonts). Of course, Arial dominated home and office printing and web design ever since, as it was readily available. Apple licenses Helvetica proper and ships it in MacOS.

  • If you mean that DejaVu Sans is an analogue of Helvetica/Arial, that’s not so. The DejaVu fonts are derived from Bitstream Vera, and the Sans variation is wider than Helvetica. It’s also somewhat humanist, as opposed to Helvetica’s strictly grotesque look.

Liberation Sans and Nimbus Sans seem to be the best-known open-licensed metrically-compatible analogues of Helvetica, although Liberation doesn’t recreate the look. Nimbus is also the basis for FreeSans.

As for embedding fonts, afaiu it depends on the license.

  • I seem to have developed some kind of ADHD in adulthood, while also avoiding caffeine in recent years. Now, if I drink two cups of coffee, I come to four fours later with fifty new tabs in the browser, the system deeply in swap, two new projects started and abandoned, and nothing actually done. If I’m lucky, some system reconfiguration that I’ve been putting off for months, will finally be made.
