Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why use Proxmox over Podman or Docker?English
2·13 days agoI use a different ‘type 1’ hypervisor, create a small handful of VMs and then have a mess of containers inside containers in a couple of those. There’s a distinct VM for email since that has so many special requirements that it was just easier, one lxc/incus container host for admin tools, one for user apps, one for piefed because all these fediverse apps are so busy with the constant exchanges it kind of needs its own host to not affect others…
Why is more a case of ease of administration frankly. Pretty much everything gets auto patched and backed up and it’s easy to put up a new service or restore things if I hose something up.
The structure though has been a years long evolution that started out as ‘I just want a NAS to share files’ which then needed a frontend to make it more user friendly, and another app to play videos, and why not organize different file types rather than just dump em in a folder…

Eh, could also just be ‘assume each box is 1 cm’ without intending to be accurate.
Now if they said use a ruler to figure it out and they claimed it’s 10 then there’s an issue where someone needs a new tool
Maybe someone hit the 110% size on a copy machine?
George Carlin: Sigmund Freud said “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” Oh yeah? Well sometimes it’s a big brown dick… with a fat, arrogant, white-collared, business-criminal a*****e sucking on the wet end of it!
The world can be full of subtext and extra meanings, but it’s high stress to always be on watch for it. 🙃
I can get it, speaking for myself I think a big part of the ‘ick’ to the comment comes from the environment of the fedi itself.
There seems to be an over-representation of people on here with a self-righteous, purity tested sort of mentality preaching to others how they should be shamed for not abiding by some rigid standard they would see as worthy. It wears thin after a while.
The ‘curse of’ bit has a feel of that, ‘you’re an unenlightened cur for finding it amusing’.
The balance as I see it is between ‘nobody should be upset about anythin so say whatever you want’ vs ‘you have to be forever careful of every word lest someone be upset’. Somewhere in there is a balance where people don’t have to be constantly on edge but aren’t acting like an unrestrained asshole.

2·29 days agoTo an extent that’s how it works with my ebook. Got a case off Etsy that has a snap-shut pocket the size of my phone. That couple seconds to unclip it and slide it out in addition to unlocking it makes it a lot less tempting to check on that ding that went off while reading.
Curse of the politically aware.
Be wary of phrases that imply superiority of awaness or thought
While I sure wouldn’t go sharing it in an email thread, I wouldn’t say it’s overtly nsfw. Might raise a few questions of that was your common taste though.

For point of reference, is there any name/description that wouldn’t make you upset? They could say any name and any description and there’s some case somewhere of that group being harmed. That all not accounting for the notion that there’s no indication his entire ‘book’ is young women to give it some measure of objectification/lessering.
It’s just a crass comic depicting crazy killer sorts, whole movie/tv franchises have been spawned off such tales and events.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Moving db data (MariaDB) to NFS NASEnglish
2·1 month agoBorg is its own thing, just handy to have it built in and preconfigured to work. If you run VMs on your working host instead of running NC directly on the machine you could just back those up for pretty much the same effect, though it wouldn’t usually be a realtime backup.
The next cloud data is fine being remote, when I say realtime I guess it could be better said as time sensitive. A database needs to update something and read it back in the right sequence for it to work properly. Just retrieving a file doesn’t have those issues.
If you happened to use it in a way like shared collaboration of a document with realtime updates it might be an issue, but I expect in that case the revisions would hit the DB first and then be put to the file as a secondary operation. Never tried that myself though.

7·1 month agoWithout getting into things like a SAN it’s generally not a good plan to put anything that needs realtime access remote to the device processing it. DBs are constantly making updates and introducing the odd bit of latency or a disconnect can make for lots of issues. I also have a worker/storage split setup and for a while tried just running the VMs as a whole using remote storage to host the vdisk, it wasn’t pretty even with a separate network dedicated to it.
For NC particularly, if you use their official AIO docker setup there is a built in borg backup you can store remotely and it makes restoration pretty painless.

politics @lemmy.world•Democrats shocked after 2 members cross aisle to help Republicans | CNN PoliticsEnglish
17·1 month agoRepublicans like Rep. Chip Roy refused to support a Senate-passed funding bill that didn’t allow House conservatives to insert their own priorities, like provisions against what they call “mass surveillance” or more money for President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.
There’s some element of good in not letting them push for more ICE funding in letting this go through. Still would just as soon see nothing function and send them all home for now until we can seat a new batch.

Mostly Zabbix and my own email server. Way I figure if there’s something broken enough to take out the email internally I’m probably already dealing with a broader issue.
