A closed source, centralized Lemmy alternative. I doubt it’ll ever take off.

Are you using the main website, or using an alternative frontend/app? It would also be helpful if you provided examples of posts/comments that work that way.
My first guess would be that images “display nicely” when the post URL is an actual image file (JPG, PNG, GIF, etc.), but not when the post URL is actually just to a web page that contains the image. Most image posts on Lemmy are to a JPG or whatever, but the one common outlier that comes to mind is the webcomic Hypocra Sea. Instead of linking to the actual PNG, the Hypocra Sea account posts links to the Hypocra Sea webpage that contains the PNG (probably because that web page also has ads). So, unlike most posts on the webcomics communities that you can just tap the thumbnail and the image opens in a neat image viewer, when you tap the thumbnail of a Hypocra Sea post, it actually navigates you to the Hypocra Sea website.

I think a lot of people simply don’t have many pictures of themselves, but they do have pictures of themselves with fish/deer because it’s tradition to get a photo of yourself with someone you just killed. So they use that photo because it’s literally the only kind of photo they have of themselves on hand.

So the Phantom Menace?
If you already have Syncthing set up, yeah, it’s probably the simplest option. No need to install anything new, set up a new account somewhere, start a new Docker container, etc. I certainly haven’t tried all the options out there, but I don’t have any complaints about performance with this Joplin sync solution.
Certainly. This is what I do:
joplin or somethingjoplin folder that you created in step 2/your/path/here/joplinI seem to remember Alexandrite being the main recommendation for people missing some of the customization offered by Tesseract.

Aw, I figured there would be a new dad shirt gag in each comic, but not this one

Probably because that post they linked was posted by their lemm.ee account, not their piefed.social account. The problem is that lemm.ee shut down; that Lemmy instance no longer exists. That post had federated to piefed.social at some point before lemm.ee shut down, so that is why it shows up there. But that post had not federated to lemmy.zip before then, so you are not able to find it by looking it up there now.
Leave it out in the rain to install Rust

OP has had a bit of a streak of butt-related posts…
What is the joke here?
Humans built the pyramids. Aliens just use them as landing pads for their space ships.

I wonder why I had written it off months ago, because giving it another shot now, that app sure seems to suit all my needs. Perhaps I had just tried it out when it was very new and lacked many of the features that I wanted and could find in Thunder.

(Voyager’s gestures kept throwing me off I think lol)
I disabled all gestures in Voyager. I also found them annoying.

loads all images, regardless of source
Is it certain websites that were the problem, or file formats, or something else?

The killer feature for me is swipe gesture navigation. Most apps do not have that. If anything, they might have a “swipe in from the edge of the screen” gesture, but that is not the same as being able to swipe from any point onscreen to go back.
It also supports PieFed.
