The brother of my ex gave us for Thanksgiving a turkey he raised one year, that was good. And the never-frozen heirloom birds are pretty good too. My kids would agree with you on turkey, though, and I do agree on the chicken, my husband likes the boneless skinless soulless breast but bone-in skin-on thighs are so much better and so forgiving to cook.

More water is another way of putting that. I get different results with different hydration levels in my sourdough. Made a whole wheat sandwich bread once with 100% hydration (equal parts flour & water by weight not volume) and it definitely needed to be in a loaf pan but was so good.
So yeah less flour means more hydrated dough, though I do personally hold flour steady at 1 kilo for 2 loaves and adjust everything around that.
It’s not the food, it’s the beard. And Edmonton.
Pretty accurate graph for me so far. I would say “it gets better” is more true. Childhood kind of sucks and early adulthood is poverty and stress. 30s the nadir maybe, not much worse than childhood. But from my 40s things have improved, and so has my mental health and happiness. Like I got more competent at more of my life, finally.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Mosquitoes are picky eaters. We studied 3 common South Florida species to learn why they like some people more than othersEnglish
1·20 days agoMy husband is very suspicious when I ask him to join me on the porch in the evening - mosquitoes will ignore me if he’s around, I’m never their first choice but if I am the only one out there they will settle, lol.
I always figured it was because I run cool, not warm, don’t sweat much, and also eat a lot of spicy food, not much sweet.
Goat cheese is amazing, and goat milk caramel oh my. But straight up goat milk is not delicious.
Waiting until I’m sleepy to go to bed & sleeping until I wake up.
Yoga, it’s shocking how healthy that keeps me.
XLookup.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•[US] When's the last time you saw a car other than red, black, blue, gray, or white on the road?
1·22 days agoThere’s an orange truck on our street but I swear half the cars on the road here are white. What the fuck is up with all those white cars?
Fucking garage house. My least favorite architectural style. I hate the garage out front with the unfriendly hidden front door so much. It makes bad neighbors too.
If you are disabled and can’t go up steps I understand. But God I hate that look.
I have never quite understood the obsession with life as suffering - life includes suffering but is not defined by suffering, it’s defined by physical embodiment and consciousness. I don’t really fear death exactly, but do so enjoy being physically embodied and conscious. Have I suffered? Sure, plenty. But not more than I have enjoyed. I don’t at all define or experience my life AS suffering. Joy is louder.
I do think heaven or afterlife would have to involve losing all critical thought and individuality, particularly the Christian heaven, I don’t think most people could be ecstatically happy if they knew others were in hell and they could not do anything to try to help.

memes@lemmy.world•If you like Griffith, I don't wanna be your friend
2·25 days agoI do both. Doesn’t everyone? I love a healthy home cooked meal, a book or article so deep it feels as satisfying as sex, but also can love a bag of french fries or a repeat of Pride & Prejudice or Hot Fuzz.
Sometimes it’s relaxing to be shallow for a bit.
Bare minimum familiarity with these to go out dancing. Fosse, Graham, Morris, Ailey, Brown.
Not the cat, but I trained the dog to stomp grasshoppers.
One of our cats, Kimchi, once ran out the door and before I could close it, ran in with a lizard. world’s fastest hunt. Like before I realized she was out and yelled for her to get back in (inside cat).
And once, before the era of cell phones, I saw a lizard wrestle a palmetto bug. Equal in size, it was crazy, like a monster movie.
UPS the child would arrive with tire tracks on them and be thrown at the house from the road.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Everyone should like at least one polarizing thing.
2·27 days agoOh I love some polarizing foods.
Anchovies, sardines, black licorice, really spicy stuff, mustard greens. Not together. But love all of those.
Obscure? The Ramsey Midwood song Feed my Monkey is so good.
Bistek in Spanish for Beefsteak here always makes me laugh.
Yeah that will improve but really, for now, one of you should get up early and one sleep in, wake the other one up as you are leaving for work, in the evening morning person go to bed & let evening person them handle putting the baby down to sleep. Even one more hour of sleep helps so much.
Also I never spooned food into any of them, nursed a couple years but didn’t give baby food just things they could eat themselves, pieces of food, until they were just eating food no nursing. Baths I often just took them in the shower with me when very small. Rolled up whole outfits, underwear, socks, everything and let them take one & dress themselves pretty early on. Streamline where you can, it doesn’t hurt them at all. If you can always include them when you cook and clean, they become helpful faster, I was not good at that. But remember they WANT to grow up, let him do as much as he can for himself. It won’t be much yet but just get in the habit.
Yes. Two & three year olds are blisteringly cute, but take so much attention, you are right.
Around 7 is the age of reason, so that’s when it really eases, you can explain more and control less, and teenagers can be legit helpful. But even 3 years old is easier than 2 because they can speak better, so are not so frustrated.
I remember with my first, she was truly a terrible toddler, just so much will and energy, had tantrums. On more than one occasion I had to remove her from a store or other public place. Put her in gymnastics and all that energy got focused on sports, was a good thing eventually.
I had 4 and married into 5 more - one day you will be thinking it all went by so fast, it’s crazy. Hang on, you will make it. I won’t say it gets easy soon, but less exhausting soon. Do you have a partner? Can one of you do more of the morning work and the other the evening shift?

Yeah I had my (5 speed) civic till someone hit me & totalled it. Got an accord sport 6 speed and still have it, it’s 12 now and still such a joy to drive. I don’t drive much now so hopefully it lasts 12 more.
My brother got 300k miles on his Honda.
It’s funny, my first car had 3 gears, second one 4 gears, the Civic had 5, and this one has 6 but also the best manual transmission I have ever encountered.
