  • There is a massive gap between rose tinted glasses and crippling nihilism. By your last comment it seems that we are both somewhere in between.

What I wrote is true, but it does not mean that it is all roses or even anywhere near as friction free as it once was, but you absolutely can still find success in this shitshow.

What you responded is also true. We need strong labor (amongst many other things) and a realistic view of the current state of our society before we can make any headway.

The point I wanted to make is that it does not serve one’s self to throw their hands up in the air, exclaim that there is no point, wait for society to magically fix itself, and do nothing but complain on the Internet.

I believe that we are stronger and more resilient than we give ourselves credit for, and maybe that’s where I concede I might have rose tinted glasses.

  • Cyberpunk dystopia came before the Star Trek utopia. Earth was recovering from that period of time when humans discovered warp travel. Warp travel is, of course, heavily dependent on computers. In Star Trek Discovery, AI is abandoned because it almost ended life, but you can see the slow creep back towards that path in TNG then Picard. Go forward far beyond the end of Discovery and you imagine a time when humans go to war with and subsequently ban intelligent machines.

I love how Dune and Asimov’s Robot/Foundation series both have intelligent machines as a “yeah, that happened, and it really sucked”.

Maybe it’s because I am in tech, but not a single person in my friends group drives a pickup truck. Even now that I’ve moved to Wyoming, there are no truck owners. To be fair, pickups suck in our weather. A lot of Subaru and vans though.

I guess what I am saying is that maybe gas guzzling pickups aren’t an American thing as much as they are a specific type of American thing.
