Recovering academic now in public safety. You’ll find me kibitzing on brains (my academic expertise) to critical infrastructure and resilience (current worklife). Also hockey, games, music just because.

2·10 days agoI think he does here, which is interesting. It is a little unclear because he keeps coming back to AI (and the interviewer is a douche) but he does seem to articulate that intelligence means consciousness which means something non-algorithmic.
I’m not even sure I have my copy of New Mind anymore but I want to go back and check my understanding of what he was arguing back in 2004 or whenever it was.
Eta: I feel like a doofus on a number of fronts. It was 1989, and right there in the wikipedia summary…
Penrose argues that human consciousness is non-algorithmic, and thus is not capable of being modeled by a conventional Turing machine, which includes a digital computer. Penrose hypothesizes that quantum mechanics plays an essential role in the understanding of human consciousness. The collapse of the quantum wavefunction is seen as playing an important role in brain function
So here is where I admit that Penrose is with it and I am going senile.

3·10 days ago“Summit competence” of the Peter Principle applies here. He is a giant in his field, so he has to move to an area where he is not an expert. Consciousness is a magnet for people who think their insights can expand beyond the arena in which they were developed. The issue is they often don’t know anything about brain or cognition when they try to do it.

163·10 days agoPenrose should stay the fuck out of the brain. He spends too much time with the computational people and not enough time looking at how cognition actually works. Hint: we are not universal Turing machines.

2·29 days agoThat’s not a public health test as it’s not reportable. Just lime I can take my own temperature but public health doesn’t care. Compare the treatment of COVID to sexually transmitted infections that are reported and contact traced.

11·30 days agoYes. But compare it to getting the clap. With a sexually transmitted disease they will report it for statistical purposes then contact trace etc. With COVID it’s only reportable with a fatality. If you test positive there is no way to get it counted. You just don’t know how much is out there.
When I say you can’t get tested it’s not like there are clinics where you can go in and et tested like you used to. Still can for STBBDs though.

431·1 month agoCOVID broke public health. You can’t even get tested where I live. Nobody has any idea of the prevelance.
Im not an expert in the area, but I gather it’s just because the Russians consider Finland and Estonia backwaters. I’ll note that Finnish and Estonian are also non-Indo-European languages, they are in the Finno-Ugric family. So my guess is a long ways away with a rustic lifestyle and they speak funny.
I did try this and sprayed out the clover after a couple years. It turned out to be super compatible with quackgrass.
I always hated it. Particularly because it ruined that Simple Minds song for me.
That’s $30 down the drain.

Finns pronounce every vowel. If there are two of them then get pronounced twice. So Snoopy becomes Sno-o-o-opy and boom becomes bo-o-o-om. Double consonants get a syllable length pause so happy becomes hap_py.
