I had a GPO to disable it corp wide back then and didn’t have any reports of issues.
I don’t want to look. I think mine might be getting towards 10 years old.

The Internet was a slow burn starting in the 1960s and gaining momentum through one of humanity’s most productive generations into the 80s and beyond, spurred on by personal computing. Mobile was a (retrospectively) natural continuation.
LLMs have been around for a very long time but they’re just forcing the issue with a product that’s not yet compelling enough to justify its enormous cost. It’s like waiting for the iPhone and the App Store to make smartphones ubiquitous.

What technical, fundamental reason is there for the crash in price? The article just accepts the MSRP as fact. It’s established fact that retail prices can be dropped below cost in order to establish market dominance. The cost of training can indeed be spread over time but it’s not spread across enough time (between model releases)The inference cost doesn’t actually drop in reality.
Spot on. Regulatory capture is not usually this transparent.
A key difference is that engineering standards have grown to the point where we don’t hire a plumber to come multiple times to clear drains and patch leaks. The drains were built large enough and with proper materials to last for years without maintenance. We don’t have people constantly shoring up bridges either.
This is why some people don’t consider software engineering to be engineering.
Too many people justifying their existence by shipping unnecessary and poorly thought out features leads to unreliable, complex software that needs constant maintenance to keep it running.
