You should probably think a little more. Public code repos are not anonymous. And torrents require some form of advertising to even know they exist.

They can be. Throwaway account on hosted git service, connected through anonymity service (TOR, VPN…).

And torrents require some form of advertising

Many indexers are anonymous, a magnet link on a forum or even a site like lemmy is good enough.

I’m not going to argue about the semantics of anonymity on the internet. If you want to stay hidden enough to distribute a mod and not be found out who you are, you can do it. Its not that difficult.

I’d say if you can stay anonymous while distributing physical goods online, you can stay anonymous while distributing software online

You just did. Those things are not anonymous. And are subject to EAs lawsuits and likely to be taken down elsewhere just like they are on GitHub.

This is honestly a valid question. We live in a time where even if what you are doing is in the boundaries of the law you may have to protect your identity to avoid the threat of lawsuit.

This is a good example. Paid for the game but don’t want it to be always online or whatknot? Don’t go tampering with EA’s game you naughty boy/girl.

I think about the times I’ve downloaded mods for games like the original Dawn of War or Star Wars Empire at war. Legality was never a question especially since those mods were still in-universe in those franchises but now licensing agreements mixed with more hostile and litigious publishers could make you a target for lawsuit.
