The Chilean Air Force is already planned the replacement of its historic F-5 Tiger III aircraft, which was entered service in 1976 and, after half century a of service, are near the end of their life operating. The decision should be made between 2030 and 2035.
Among the alternatives is the American F-35, considered one of the most fighter forwarder jets in the world. It is not just a combat aircraft: it integrates radar, sensors, electronic warfare, and the ability to collect and distribute intelligence in real time.
Air Force Brigadier General Milton Zablah described it as “a computer that has wings,” due basically to its ability to connect different systems in a multidimensional warfare scenario.
The Chilean Air Force must now decides which platform and technological level it needs to maintain its air deterrent capability for the next decade.
In this episode of Topic of the Day, we speak with retired General John Griffiths, former Chief of Staff of the Air Force.
