Well, there was the blatant racist shit that they didn’t mention in the post but was there in reality. Also, it makes the US look like dolts. Not exactly patriotic, lol.

Technology@lemmy.world•Reddit is killing RSS feeds and ending public API access because of AI botsEnglish
541·6 days agoNo, they aren’t. The headline is just a giant lie. Why would anyone pretend to believe it?
Reddit was destroyed by bots years ago. So that’s nonsense. But they have two strong reasons to pull public access. First, if the public has access to the data, then companies won’t buy it for AI training. Second, if the public has access to the data, they can prove (as we already knew) that Reddit is full of bots, so there is no reason you would want to buy training data from it.

3·7 days agoWell of course. The whole point of US trade policy was to maintain global dominance. You don’t think that politicians were sending money to other countries purely out of the goodness of their own heart, do you? … Of course some of them have good intentions some of the time, but let’s not pretend no other reasons came into consideration.

71·7 days agoForeign countries using Google, Microsoft, or Apple, would be suicidal not to change platforms. Right now, the U.S. has incredible leverage: it can turn off their government servers, delete their data, and is certainly spying on them right now.
The only reasonable move is some kind of self-hosted setup, at least for a large chunk of critical infrastructure, with some cloud options for backups, maybe, who knows, if the country is too small or centralized.

3·12 days agoRight right, but this was advertising language. In reality it was a one-time performance bonus, but they called it a signing bonus to trick people into joining.
The problem ICE lawyers will have is that if they call it a signing bonus, maybe the fine print doesn’t matter, because people reasonably believed that it was one… So my prediction is a class action lawsuit. Although that will be interesting because there are limits on what federal employees can sue for. We shall see.

20·12 days agoRemember, my friends, this is still part of the scam. Now they will file lawsuits, paid for by you and I, the taxpayers, and they’ll get partial bonuses paid out in the end.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google’s AI Is Destroying Search, the Internet, and Your BrainEnglish
343·13 days agoWell no, the title is wrong. Google itself destroyed Google Search. And the Internet does not depend on Google Search. And most of us don’t use Google’s AI.
Of course there are some real damages, but the title itself is bait click. It’s just false at face value. Do better next time.

And whatever their residence is, if they do things that look like working while physically present in the state, they are at risk of being forced to pay.
Yes and no. Take breaks when you want, of course. But sometimes you are there at the start of something, if you try.

They are snake oil salesman. They sell vaporware. Don’t fucking buy it.
Ed sure fucked himself… I’d blame his PR rep, but this was such a predictable fuckup that the better explanation is that Ed has really shitty values.

Technology@lemmy.world•Bernie Sanders says if AI is coming for workers, it should bring a four-day workweek with itEnglish
43·20 days agoOh Bernie Bernie Bernie. AI is 95% vaporware. Stop fretting about the shit they claim they’ll produce but never will.
(Obviously changing technology requires some legal changes. Yes yes. But focus on the real shit that’s already happened, not the bullshit they are promising.)
Maybe you don’t read the same articles that I read, but I very much have seen people claiming the things that the article is fighting against.
Here’s something you should consider. The big AI companies just released a statement saying we should be worried about AI killing everyone accidentally in the future or some such s***. But if they’re selling vaporware, and they know it, and they realize the only thing they actually created was fairly powerful LLMs, they would be desperate to cover up that fact. They would be desperate to make themselves relevant, to pretend that AI is going somewhere when it isn’t.
Another way of looking at things as that author has also written is that we’re looking at definitional questions where the people selling us things are liars. If you point out that their technology hasn’t matched the promises that they made, they will counter by pointing at some advanced statistical methods. If you point out that AI drive-thrus are a failure, and that AI at Pizza Hut has destroyed hundreds of franchises to the point that they sued corporate, then they’ll respond by talking about how intelligent ChatGPT sounds.
So at some point if you want to have a sensible conversation about AI, you need to start to define what you’re talking about. Or you could pretend that there is no need to define things to deflect from the issue, so that nobody reading would learn anything about the world.

People have always asked that question about tech, my friend. You just weren’t listening.
But AI is snake oil. It won’t reduce work. It’ll just fuck up things that currently work and let the billionaires get richer. Vaporware. That’s it. That’s why nobody asks about newfound free time. Cuz it’s fake.
